The mission of the Oakland Jewish Alliance is to fight antisemitism and to safeguard the civil rights of the Oakland Jewish community.

Announcements

• October 24th, 2025:

  • The Mercury News publishes an article mentioning the OJA about the California Department of Education ruling that OUSD discriminated against Jewish students and their families.

• October 22nd, 2025:

  • OJA sends open letter to Mayor Lee and the Oakland City Council about violent threats made against the local Jewish community by Fathi Abdulrahim Harara, the owner of the Jerusalem Coffee House

• October 21st, 2025:

  • The California Department of Education rules that the OUSD has discriminated against Jewish students and their families, as reported in the J Weekly. This came about in part by the lawsuit against the OUSD, where the OJA was the plaintiff, and by the dedicated work of community activists, many who are members of the OJA.

• October 16th, 2025:

  • The OJA is mentioned in the Oaklandside article about the passage of AB 715 on October 7th: "Newsom signs law addressing claims of antisemitism and bias in public schools"

• October 5th, 2025:

  • The OJA put together a moving commemoration of October 7th for the greater Oakland community [mention in the J Weekly]

• October 3rd, 2025: 

  • The OJA is mentioned in the Oaklandside article "Alameda County half-adopts ‘ethical investment policy’ amid concerns around Gaza war"

• September 11th, 2025:

  • The J Weekly covers our Oakland / Piedmont Community Safety Briefing event

• April 3rd, 2025:

  • Marleen Sacks filed a lawsuit charging the Oakland Unified School District with repeated violations of Jewish students' & parents' civil rights, with the OJA as a plaintiff. Click here for the press release and the lawsuit itself.

• October 9th, 2024:

  • We have put together a video showing the rampant antisemitism manifest at the Oakland City Council, our return to change the narrative about the Jewish community of Oakland, and what we are fighting for. See video below.

• February 12, 2024:

  • In two letters, OJA officially requests that the California Attorney General and the City of Oakland investigate the open displays of antisemitism and numerous violations of the civil rights of the Oakland Jewish community, based on the incidents that occurred at the November 27th City Council meeting.
